Got a BAD Recommendation from Device Doctor
Hi,
I just discovered Device Doctor (DD) today when I was looking for a program to review my drivers. I had just upgraded (via a clean install) from Win XP to Win 7 about six weeks ago, but I continue to get warnings about driver issues. I have been unable to track that down, so finally got DD. I had most recently (just before getting DD) used Device Manager in Windows 7 to check all the drivers for my graphics, hard drives, DVD and DVD burner drives, joystick, keyboard, mouse, etc. All appeared to have up to date drivers, per Windows. I ran Device Doctor (DD) once -and it only picked up one need - DD said that my generic (PS/2) ergonomic keyboard needed new drivers. The ones it recommended were WinXP drivers (the keyboard is about six years old). I made a system restore point, then installed the DD-recommended drivers. On my next reboot, all hell broke loose!!!! I couldn't get Windows to get past a DOS-like text screen on booting up. Finally, I did an F8 bootup into Windows Safe mode and used my system restore point (thus removing the lousy drivers). At this point, I understandably now have trouble trusting "advice" from Device Doctor. I will ask - do you think it would be better to go to a Microsoft Ergonomic USB keyboard, in case there is a driver issue there (even though Windows 7 says its driver is ok)? Sorry to share bad news, but I felt I needed to post this based upon my experience with DD. BobR in New Mexico "Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me." This is our function, our challenge, our fulfillment - and our inheritance, to accept, embrace and share. |
