I have seen similar problem when people have both IE and another web browser, there is some bug that can be overcome by first setting IE as default web browser, then running Opera and setting it as default web browser, that often helps.

I don't have a firewall
and opera IS the default browser

But I will try the "change default browser" trick. There is no IE on the system, but maybe chrome does the trick.
